Chapter Eight

This was insane, Killian told himself as he quietly turned the knob and pushed open the door into Cordie’s room. It was cool and dark, and he stood there a moment to let his eyes adjust.

He caught her scent and heard her quiet breathing. Then he couldn’t wait another moment, whether he could see where he was going or not. Absently, he realized that that could also apply to the way their life was going. He was tired of old grudges, tired of being doubtful, tired of holding back. It wasn’t his style, and the effort was a strain.

He went quietly toward the side of the bed near the window, noticing that the digital display on her clock read 12:45. After he’d talked to Tokyo, he’d entered all the changes that had to be made in an e-mail to Lew and sent it. Then he’d walked around with a gin and tonic in his hand, trying to talk himself out of going to Cordie’s room. A legion of arguments denied the wisdom of making love to her right now—she’d been correct; nothing had been solved.

Yet, deep in his heart, that didn’t seem to matter.

He sat on the edge of her bed. She continued to sleep, curled up on her side, one hand wrapped around the other under her chin. He put a gentle hand to her hair. She’d freed it from the ponytail for sleeping and it was all over her pillow, strands of it lay across her face and some of it was tangled in the blankets over her shoulder.

The cat, he noticed belatedly, slept on the pillow beside her.

Cordie sat up suddenly, awakened by his touch, a gasp in her throat he suspected was about to turn into a scream. Versace leaped up on all fours, his back arching.

Killian quickly put a hand to Cordie’s mouth to stifle the sound, whispering, “Cordie, shh! It’s me!”

Her shoulders slumped in relief, and as he lowered his hand, she smacked his shoulder. “You scared me to death!” she squeaked. “What’s the matter?” Her expression changed to one of concern. “Is something wrong?”

“Everything’s fine,” he reassured her quickly. “Except between us.”

Her eyes glistened in a sudden glow of moonlight. “I don’t know what to do about it.”

He pushed her hair back over her shoulder. “I had a thought on that.”

She was silent for an instant, then she asked softly, “What?”

“Let’s just shelve it.”

She blinked once. “Shelve it?”

“Forget it. That’s what we do with ideas we can’t make work either because they don’t seem to get us anywhere or they have problems that are too complicated or too costly to solve. We stop wasting time on them.”

She opened her mouth to speak, as though she wanted to challenge his solution. She smiled, instead. “I’m in favor of that.”

“Excellent. Then I’ve got something for you.” He pulled her wedding ring out of the pocket of his jeans and slipped it on the third finger of her left hand. Then he put it to his lips.
